Tax trix

Facing South is dropping some serious science on Republicans who are managing to cheat the IRS and Katrina survisors at the same time!

I want to snicker about this, but I won’t

Reality rears its ugly heard, and a long overdue modicum of responsibility is introduced at the White House:

In a White House known for both defiance and optimism, yesterday’s senior staff changes represent a frank acknowledgment of the trouble in which President Bush now finds himself. They are also a signal of how starkly Bush’s second-term ambitions have shifted after a year of persistent problems at home and abroad.

Longtime Bush confidant Karl Rove — who had hoped to use his position of deputy chief of staff to usher in an expansive conservative agenda — was relieved of his policy portfolio to concentrate on long-term strategy and planning for a November midterm election that looks increasingly bleak for Republicans.
Washington Post: White House Shifts Into Survival Mode

This week is off to a bad start

Asshole landscaping service I woke this morning to Brian telling me that there was a 100-pound rock on the bumper of my car! It appears that a driver (drunk? vendetta? macho hummer owner?) drove into our yard.

When confronted with this huge rock, the driver concluded the best way out of this situation was forward. They shoved the rock about a foot until it rolled down the hill into my car. Then they shoved (threw?) more rocks into the street and driveway as they forced their way out of the yard.

Here are all my pictures of the aftermath. There was a broken reflector next to where the big rock used to sit, and some skid marks on the curbs, but no paint chips and no tracks in the grass. That rock is HUGE. My friend Mark and I were barely able to roll it off my car this morning.

Vote Nall Y’all

You know, I am no Libertarian, but that party’s nominee for the Alabama Governor’s race is really growing on me. Loretta Nall (slogan: “Vote Nall, Y’all) has a great platform, in which I haven’t yet found anything to disagree with with (but probably would if I dig deep enough in to gun territory). I do have some disagreements with her ugly campaign website, but I’ll let those be.

Pam Spaulding at Pam’s House Blend recounts a recent episode where an Alabama journalist complained of the too-sexy picture of Ms. Nall adorning his column about her. Somehow he managed to blame her for having breasts instead of blaming his editor for the tacky selection. Ms. Nall’s reply was comprehensive, articulate, and funny. I will make a contribution to her campaign in support of smart women everywhere.

Go to Pam’s House Blend to read the whole funny story, and then give Loretta a hand.

Better late than never

I was just thinking… if it hadn’t been for 9/11, I wonder if Bush would have been as unpopular in 2002 as he is now.

President Bush has hit new lows in public opinion for his handling of Iraq and the war on terror and for his overall job performance. Polling also shows the Republican Party surrendering its advantage on national security.

The AP-Ipsos survey is loaded with grim election-year news for a party struggling to stay in power. Nearly 70 percent of Americans believe the nation is headed in the wrong direction — the largest percentage during the Bush presidency and up 13 points from a year ago.
