W00t! Go Tarheels. I was there…
I was actually really impressed by State. They players were garceful, and made a lot of great plays. Carolina’s defense simply shut them down in the second half.
I’m all about UNC basketball, especially the women’s team. And the ACC ain’t too shabby.

Matt Doherty (UNC basketball player 1980-84 and coach 2000-03) has a new job coaching at Southern Methodist University and a new blog!
Watching three games is too much. Can’t do it. Therefore, I will try to get a chair between both courts and look at the “A” court first and during dead balls, study the “B” court. One time I was in LA looking at a 7 footer named Chad Bell on my “A” court. During dead balls I looked at court “B”. As I was looking at court “B” I saw this kid flying all over the court. He would steal the ball and lay it up, time and time again. At half time I learned that the team on court “B” was from South Carolina. I then turned my chair and flipped courts, making court “B” my “A” court and “A” my “B”. After the game I found out that the little jet on court”B” was Raymond Felton! Eight months later Raymond commited to me at UNC and three years later he lead the Tar Heels to the NCAA Championship!

I love it. Um… go you Mustangs?
Thanks to Ed Cone for the link.
To the UNC men’s basketball team (#15) who just deafeated Duke (#1) 83 – 76,
You guys are insprational. Throughout this entire season you have exceeded everyone’s expectations, and tonight you demonstrated more heart than Coach K could ever buy.
I want to give every one of you a big kiss for believing in yourselves.
I am in basketball heaven.
Love,
Ruby
PS: Stay tuned to watch the women’s team win the ACC championship tomorrow afternoon.
The good news is I found the schedule and bracket for the women’s ACC tournament. The bad news is that UNC is playing UVA at 11 am today!
Here’s my dilemma: should I tape it and avoid looking at scores until I watch it after work? Or should I just content myself with the fact that I know they will win?
Lest you think that the end of my job at Planned Parenthood meant the end of my globetrotting… I have got my own personal world tour coming up in March. I will be out of town on 3 different trips for a total of 15 days.
Oh, and by the way this meeting will be in Montevideo, URUGUAY! It will be a short but amazing trip for me. I have been across the U.S. and I have been to Europe, but this will be my first time in South America, the developing world, or the southern hemisphere of this large planet. I can’t wait to practice my Spanglish, and that’s just the beginning of this short (3 days there, 1.5 days in transit) adventure.
You can learn more about my trip from looking at my ‘montevideo’ bookmarks.
Plus I get to visit the Texan branch of my family!
Meanwhile there is a small matter of basketball going on! UNC women are now #1 in the nation, and Ivory Latta can taste the NCAA championship. The men are #2 in the ACC and we’re getting better with every game recently, so I think we could be a contender for that title and should make a strong showing in the NCAA as well. Wish me luck in getting to see any of it. 😉
We’re in for a treat today, basketball fans. Not only is the UNC men’s team (“we’re #23, woot!”) playing Miami. The still-#1-ranked UNC women’s team is playing Virginia and it’s on TV!

I pity anyone who missed the matchup tonight between the two best women’s college basketball teams in the country. Going into this game, UNC and Duke were the only two undefeated college basketball teams (of any gender) in the country. At #2, Carolina surely had the potential to beat #1 Duke, but when we were down by 13 at the half, we were not feeling as optimistic. As Ivory and Sylvia both said: the Tarheels played their hearts out and won a georgeous 74-70 victory.
I know there are a lot of great players at UNC. And Erlana Larkins carried a great part of the game today. But I just have to say that Ivory Latta has the strength of Eric Montross and the size and speed of Speedy Gonzalez. There’s nothing she can’t do. Oh, and by the way…
P.S. Happy anniversary, Dr. Boxhill (the voice of the UNC women’s team, as well as their academic advisor).
You may not know that I am a big fan of UNC basketball. My history with the team goes back to winning the 1982 national championship when I was an 11-year-old kid in Chapel Hill. In those days you could line up to have your picture taken with Michael Jordan at Apple Chill. Then when I was a UNC senior in 1993, they did it again! And of course last year, Brian and I got to enjoy the victory together.
It’s clear the men’s team this year is giving us a very happy surprise as they have now worked their way up to #20 in the nation. But have you been paying attention to UNC’s women’s basketball team? They are ranked #4 now, and have a real superstar on their team – Ivory Latta. She is only 5’6″ and you will see her wipe the floor with entire teams when she plays. She is full of energy and talent. And look out, because she’s only a junior!
In an effort to pay more attention to UNC’s fabulous team of women, I am doing two things. One is I am subscribing by RSS to any blog mentions of Ivory (via Technorati). The second is that I am publishing a calendar of women’s games. If you have iCal or a compatible program, you can can subscribe to this URL and get all the dates in your calendar automatically. (Brian and I already subscribe to the men’s schedule and it’s very convenient.) You can also view their schedule online at TarHeelBlue.com.
