On Teresa

A friend’s blog discussed “The very public lynching of Teresa Heinz Kerry,” these are my thoughts:

Teresa will get put through the wringer, no doubt. That’s how the right-wingers feel about strong, articulate women, and their media lapdogs will follow their orders as usual.

But I think Teresa will have a better time of it for having come after Hillary Rodham Clinton. The media hated HRC from the get-go, alternately calling her a feminazi one week or too feminine the next. She couldn’t please them, no matter how hard she tried.

The fact that Hillary survived that Salem Witch Trial in D.C., and went on to be popularly elected by a populous state, shows that most people know and love strong women. It’s just insecure men, like Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh, that will always feel threatened by a woman who doesn’t need them. I pity them.

Not too shabby

I thought Kerry’s speach last night was great, and I didn’t plan to like it. I was pleased to see him (and Edwards the night before) appealing to the base, who has been so ignored by the Democratic party.

The daughters made me want to puke, though. I think it was pretty excessive for them to trot out some of their most personal memories of their father on national TV. Save it for a funeral!

And how about Mara Liasson (sp?) on NPR this morning calling Kerry’s speech light on details. I guess she skipped Edwards speech where he layed all that shit out so Kerry didn’t have to. More sloppy reporting. And the “journalists” wonder why they are increasingly considered irrelevant…

It’s within reach

I agree with
this blogger (who refers to
this pollster) who says that the election is John Kerry’s to lose. I mean, how can the country be this thoroughly fucked up and people still not vote for a change? It has to mean the bad guys are master communicators (they are) and the good guys are pretty incompetent (um…)

To be fair, the election is all of ours to lose. No one person can do it on her or his own, nor should they. When John Kerry wins with progressivce grassroots support, he’ll owe us a debt of gratitude. Let’s hope he doesn’t forget that immediately like Clinton did.

Come on down

…to the place to be during the last night of the convention. Hell!

Decorations. Free stuff. Voter registration. Cake. Beer. What more could you ask for? Well, aside from another one-term Bush. Tell your friends. The party starts at 8pm. We need you there!

Fundamental Truth at the DNC

I guess I was too busy being cynical last night to notice the Buddhist influence in John Edwards’ speech.

Like all of us, I have learned a lot of lessons in my life. Two of the most important are that first, there will always be heartache and struggle–you can’t make it go away. But the other is that people of good and strong will can make a difference. One lesson is a sad lesson and the other’s inspiring.

The Four Noble Truths (the foundation of Buddhism):

  1. Life means suffering.
  2. The origin of suffering is attachment.
  3. The cessation of suffering is attainable.
  4. The path to the cessation of suffering.

Johnny B. Good

That son-of-a-millworker sure can talk. I’d say his made-for-TV moment gets an A (not plus). But I expected no less, it’s what he was hired for, and he will deliver. He’s a great big, human photo-op. How can you not think “hope is on the way” when he gives you that smile? But will he still love us in the morning?

“Trust us!”

This goes well beyond the fox guarding the henhouse, and is into the realm of frying the chickens and handing them out door-to-door. The AP reports that
Florida already lost the records of previous touchscreen votes but they still think it’s a great idea, and there’ll be no need for verifying or recounting!

…election reform groups asked a judge to strike down a state rule preventing counties that use the machines from conducting manual recounts from them.

State election officers say manual recounts are not needed since the machines tell each voter if they are skipping a race, known as an undervote, and will not let them vote twice for the same race, known as an overvote. The officials also maintain that the computer systems running the machines can be trusted to count the votes accurately as they’re cast, and give the final numbers when needed.
