Leon Holmes:

Holmes elected to serve as the President of the Arkansas Right to Life, an organization devoted virtually exclusively to outlawing abortion. Holmes also chose to hold the position of the Secretary of the Unborn Child Amendment Committee, which advanced a constitutional amendment to the Arkansas Constitution that prohibits the use of public funds for abortion unless the woman’s life was in danger. Holmes’ involvement with these organizations has not been limited to these positions – he himself has served as their counsel.

Holmes has explained his support for a constitutional amendment that would outlaw abortion, saying that “the abortion issue is the simplest issue this country has faced since slavery was made unconstitutional and it deserves the same response.” He also dismissed concerns that a constitutional amendment banning abortion would not allow the procedure in cases of rape by saying that the “concern for rape victims is a red herring because conceptions from rape occur with approximately the same frequency as snowfall in Miami.” In his writings, Holmes has even twice compared abortion to the Holocaust.

If these examples of Holmes’ hostility to a woman’s right to choose were not enough, Holmes also represented an individual who was convicted of trespassing on the premises of a physician’s clinic. Holmes advocated that his client’s trespass was justified by a “choice of evils” defense because he was trying to inform women entering the clinic about the harmful effects of abortion. The court rejected Holmes’ argument and refused to allow the defense.

So Long DP, It’s Been Swell

On the question of the whether John Edwards will help or hurt Erskine Bowles. I just posted the following comment at EdCone.com:

If Bowles can’t take advantage of the increased Democratic resources flowing into N.C., it’s his own fault. Have you seen his site lately? I’m glad to see it’s been redesigned, but it’s now apparent that he’s running in the wrong primary.

The headlines:
“Homeland Security”
“Lowes Motor Speedway… Richard Petty .. Bush series”
“Fiscal Discipline… Republicans and Democrats Together”
“Fight special interests”

I sure want to beat Richard Burr, but I’m still waiting for one compelling reason to help Bowles.

I am increasingly convinced that Clinton spoiled the already-ailing Democratic party when he played his presidency so thoroughly to the center. It clearly worked for him personally, but it’s something other Dems can’t do without outright imitating Republicans. And even if they could get away with it, what’s the point?

What the hell are they fighting for? I look forward to the Democratic Party’s ultimate demise, although it’s going to be a rough time for the country until someone else gets their shit together.

Coincidence? I think not.

As the DRM astutely pointed out this morning, the timing of Resident Bush’s fundraising visit to central North Carolina has everything to do with John Edwards’ selection as VP candidate. Remember how Bush showed up in every state a day or two after each Democratic presidential primary? Don’t forget, all that travel is on your dime, Ms. Taxpayer. Yes, Karl Rove thinks you’re pretty dumb.

Anyway, I’m pleased to report that I felt much less revulsion than expected upon Edwards’ selection. In fact, I think it’s probably a good idea. And I’m excited to now be living in a swing state for a change. Bring on the TV ads and trash talking!
