The people who brought us the fascinating The Money Map during the primaries have done some more cool stuff combining FEC data and GIS maps. Even though campign contributions are public information, it’s hard for regular folks to glean any useful information from the reams of data involved. Fundrace 2004 took this information and mapped it across the country by county, zip code, and state. Now they have added localized mapping so you can find the campaign contributors in your neighborhood and even organize block parties of likeminded donors.
It’s great to see the promise of technology coming to frutionin this way – putting public information in the hands of the people. (OK, well on the monitors of the people with Internet access, but still…)
